2009 Aveo and Cobalt Are Chevrolet’s Value Cars
Both are economical to buy, cost less to own and get great gas mileage.
When it comes to overall value, it’s hard to beat the 2009 Aveo and the 2009 Cobalt, two Chevrolet models that are easy to own and operate. The subcompact Aveo has been named one of the least expensive cars to own, and the 2009 Cobalt is earning accolades for being a budget-friendly family car.
Make no mistake: The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo is a very different car from the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, but both are focused on offering high value and great gas mileage. Take the all-new 2009 Aveo5, for instance. The EPA estimates it will get 25 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway. That works out to a 28 mpg average. If gas is at $4 a gallon, it will cost you $3.50 to go 25 miles. Bump up to the 2009 Cobalt XFE, and the EPA says you can expect 25 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway. That’s an average of 30 mpg, which works out to a cost of $3.30 to
go 25 miles. These figures place both cars among the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road.
According to J.D. Power and Associates, the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo sedan and Aveo5 hatchback boast the lowest average transaction price (MSRP $12,258) in the United States. All Aveo and Aveo5 models are powered by a new, more powerful 1.6-liter Ecotec engine that uses variable valve timing and other technologies to deliver great fuel economy and responsive performance. Aveo models equipped with the available four-speed automatic transmission also deliver excellent highway mileage ratings of 34 mpg. Aveo’s city mileage rating with the automatic is 25 mpg.
"Aveo's value story has never been stronger," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet General Manager. "With great fuel economy from the new 1.6-liter Ecotec engine, bold styling and a hard-to-match roster of features including standard OnStar, the Aveo and Aveo5 deliver exceptional value for customers who don't want to sacrifice style and convenience for efficiency."
The Aveo lineup offers a high-value combination of great styling and features not expected in the segment. Crisp, sculpted lines and a wide, confident stance define both the sedan and Aveo5 hatchback's design. This broad-shoulder appearance is highlighted by premium cues including three-dimensional, richly detailed headlamps that extend into the hood, available front foglamps and bold taillamps that are set within jeweled bezels. Styling for the Aveo5 is all new for '09, both inside and out.
All 2009 Aveo and Aveo5 models come standard with dual frontal and side-impact airbags, as well as front safety belt pretensioners, a tire pressure monitoring system, oil life monitoring system and OnStar. Available features include XM Satellite Radio, leatherette seating trim, steering wheel audio controls, a power-operated sunroof that retracts into the roof for improved aerodynamics, power-adjustable and heated outside mirrors and more. What’s more, the Aveo has the best warranty coverage in America including Chevrolet's five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.
Consumers looking to squeeze the most mileage from every gallon of gas will find much to appreciate with the 2009 Chevy Cobalt XFE. The XFE stands for “Xtra Fuel Economy,” and that’s precisely what you get. The XFE achieves 37 mpg in highway driving, the very best in its segment, out-distancing competitors like the Civic, Focus and Corolla.
“Cobalt has always been an efficient performer, but the changes with the new XFE elevate it to a leadership position that will appeal to customers who put fuel economy at the top of their new-car priority list,” said Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper. “Better still, the efficiency enhancements don’t come at the price of the safety and convenience features that serve as the foundation of Cobalt’s value story.”
The Cobalt XFE LS and 1LT coupe and sedan models come with a 2.2-liter 155 hp Ecotec four-cylinder engine featuring continuously variable valve timing. This engine delivers excellent performance with a five-speed manual transmission. The XFE uses revised engine calibration, low rolling-resistance tires, and a 3.74:1 final drive ratio among the engineering measures taken to achieve a nearly 10 percent improvement over the previously attainable highway mileage. The Ecotec engine also features numerous long-life maintenance items that help reduce ownership costs.
The 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt XFE editions are well equipped and come standard with air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio with MP3 compatibility, XM Satellite Radio, rear window defogger, center console with two power outlets and head-curtain side-impact airbags. The LS trim comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, front airbags with side-curtain airbags, front bucket seats with a fold-down rear seat and satellite radio. The LT trim adds front and rear carpeted floor mats, premium cloth seat trim and power mirrors, windows and doorlocks with remote keyless entry. The SS Turbocharged has the same content as the LT, but further adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, a rear spoiler, a leather gearshift knob, a leather steering wheel, cruise control and an upgraded radio.
For 2009, Chevrolet Aveo and Cobalt are fine choices that are certain to relieve some of those gas pains we’ve all been experiencing recently. Once you’re cured, you’ll be convinced you made the smart choice in economical automobiles.

The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu Clobbers Everything in Its Class
Malibu is a midsize marvel of quality and efficiency.
Glamorous, yet practical; economical, yet well equipped; and more affordable than the imports, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu delivers everything drivers want in a midsize sedan.
Redesigned in 2008 and introduced to high critical acclaim, the Chevrolet Malibu continues to represent the quintessential midsize car in 2009. Made by Americans for Americans, the Malibu features eye-catching styling, solid, high-quality construction, and surprising power considering its excellent fuel economy ratings.
The 2009 Malibu has three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. All models come with a 169 hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine as standard equipment. The LS and LT include a four-speed automatic transmission. The LTZ includes a six-speed automatic transmission, optional on the LT. Optional on the LT and LTZ is a 252 hp 3.6-liter V6 matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Malibu Hybrid is the most affordable car of its type. The Malibu comes with standard safety features such as seat-mounted thorax airbags, side-curtain airbags, stability control, traction control and antilock brakes. New for 2009, the Malibu includes standard Bluetooth on the LTZ, optional on the LT.
The Malibu is built on the highly regarded GM Epsilon front-drive platform modified with some extra strength and extra steel in the central tunnel area and the bodysides to help quiet the car and improve its crash performance. With cabin quiet becoming a key measurement of vehicle quality, Chevrolet made certain Malibu measured up. More sound-deadening was added with composite inner fenders, thicker glass and sprayed-on sound insulation throughout the body cavities. Still more quiet was engineered into the induction system to make the engine sound powerful, but quiet at full-throttle and during downshifts.
The 2009 Malibu offers very good fuel economy with EPA ratings of 22/30 mpg for the base four-cylinder and four-speed automatic, 17/26 mpg for the V6 engine and six-speed automatic and 24/32 mpg for the so-called “mild Hybrid.” Reviewers and test drivers find the Malibu to be a smooth, comfortable sedan with plenty of power and a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Malibu’s cabin is attractive and ergonomically laid out including comfortable seats that feel ready to go the distance. Critics agree that the 2009 Malibu stands up well when compared to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the previous benchmarks for the midsize sedan segment.
The 2009 Chevy Malibu cabin is beautifully turned out with tight fits, no gaps and that intangible feeling of solid quality. There is roominess to the cabin that seems instantly comfortable. A dual-cowl dashboard and instrument panel layout appear to be inspired by vintage Corvettes. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night, complementing Malibu’s ambient lighting system, something associated with more expensive luxury brands.
Cloth, suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are single color, and several new two-tone interior combinations are available including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. The leather seats in the LTZ are particularly attractive with their contrasting piping and luxurious feel. The cabin offers ample headroom and legroom front and rear, easily accommodating six-footers in the backseat.
Every Malibu comes with XM Satellite Radio and the latest version of OnStar with Turn-by-Turn navigation. The audio and climate controls are elegantly situated and easy to operate. Chevrolet has placed Malibu’s audio controls atop the center stack in recognition that drivers adjust their stereos more than the temperature controls. A steering wheel with audio controls is available. Remote starting is also available.
The 2009 Malibu Hybrid offers the best mileage in the midsize sedan class achieving an estimated 34 mpg in highway driving and 26 mpg in the city – an improvement over 2008 models, thanks to better control of the battery charging/discharging system and new low rolling-resistance tires. Malibu uses the GM Hybrid system, consisting of a precision electric motor/generator unit replacing the conventional alternator. The 36-volt system is capable of 110 lb/ft of auto-start torque. A nickel metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery pack is capable of delivering and receiving more than 10,000 watts of peak power. The pack consists of three 12V NiMH cassettes in series totaling 36 volts. Each cassette includes two 12V NiMH modules in parallel. They are located in the front of the trunk, taking up a minimal amount of cargo space. It’s all computer controlled to be seamless and nearly unnoticeable in operation. The GM Hybrid system is mated to a 2.4-liter Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine and Hydra-Matic 4T45 four-speed transmission. This innovative hybrid powertrain is rated at 164 hp at 6,400 rpm and 159 lb/ft of peak torque at 5,000 rpm.
A comprehensive safety package with front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring is standard on the 2009 Malibu. StabiliTrak electronic stability control comes standard on LT, LTZ, and Hybrid models and includes Brake Assist. In government crash testing, Malibu received the highest possible score for occupant protection from front and side impacts.
The accolades for Malibu speak for themselves: J.D. Power and Associates “Highest Ranked Midsize Car in Initial Quality;" 2008 Car and Driver 10 Best Cars; 2008 AUTOMOBILE magazine All–Star; Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com – 2008 Best New Family Vehicle; Kiplinger's Personal Finance – Cars $20,000 – $25,000 Best in Class & Best New Car; Parents Magazine/Edmunds.com – Best Family Cars 2008.
