Do You Need a Down Payment to Buy a Car?

Short answer: not always. Some buyers qualify for financing with nothing down. But a down payment changes enough about your loan that it is worth understanding before you decide.

What a down payment does for you

  • Lowers your monthly payment. Less financed means less to repay each month.
  • Reduces total interest. You pay interest on a smaller balance for the whole term.
  • Can improve approval odds and terms. Less risk for the lender often means better options for you.
  • Protects your equity. Vehicles lose value fastest early on. Money down helps keep you from owing more than the vehicle is worth.

Can you buy with nothing down?

Sometimes. It depends on your credit profile, income and job stability, the vehicle, and the lender. Zero-down financing is a program some buyers qualify for — not a guarantee, and not available to everyone.

If you do finance with nothing down, understand the tradeoff: a higher monthly payment, more total interest, and a longer stretch before you build equity.

How much is typical?

Many buyers put down somewhere between 10% and 20%. That is a common range, not a rule. The right amount is what you can put down without draining the savings you would need if something went wrong next month.

Your trade-in can be your down payment

If you have a vehicle to trade, its value applies directly to your purchase and can serve as some or all of your down payment. You do not need cash on hand to have money down.

Budget for the costs that are not financed

Beyond the down payment, plan for taxes, tag, title, and registration, which vary by where you register the vehicle. Our posted price already includes our $788 administrative fee, so that is not an extra at signing.
