How Trade-In Value Is Determined

Trade-in value is not a guess and it is not a fixed number in a book. It is what your vehicle is worth in today's market, in its actual condition, in this region. Here is what goes into it.

What actually moves the number

Condition

Mechanical condition and cosmetic condition both count. Engine and transmission health, tire life, interior wear, paint and body condition, and whether everything works — including the things people stop noticing, like a cracked windshield or a dead speaker.

Mileage

Lower mileage generally helps, but condition can matter more. A well-maintained higher-mileage vehicle can appraise better than a neglected low-mileage one.

History

Accident history, number of previous owners, and service records all move the number. Documented maintenance helps. So does a clean title.

Market demand

This is the factor people underestimate. Values move with what buyers in this market want right now — vehicle popularity, seasonality, fuel prices, and regional demand all factor in. A four-wheel-drive truck and a compact commuter car do not follow the same curve in Eastern North Carolina.

Online estimates compared with an in-person appraisal

Online tools are a useful starting range. They cannot see your vehicle. An in-person appraisal accounts for actual condition, actual equipment, and what your specific vehicle is worth against current local demand — which is why the two numbers sometimes differ.

How to get the strongest number

  • Clean it, inside and out. It genuinely affects the appraisal.
  • Bring your service records. Documented maintenance supports the value.
  • Fix cheap things, skip expensive ones. A burned-out bulb is worth fixing. A transmission is not — you rarely recover that in trade value.
  • Bring both keys, the owner's manual, and any accessories that came with the vehicle.
  • Know your payoff. If you still owe on it, we will verify the payoff directly with your lender.

You do not have to buy from us to sell to us

OFFER TO PURCHASE — We believe that you should receive the best straightforward offer to purchase your vehicle even if you do not buy ours. This offer is good for 5 days or 300 miles and we will write a check directly to you if you decide to sell rather than trade.

Bring your vehicle in, get an appraisal, take the offer or do not. If you would rather sell than trade, we write the check to you.

What happens after you accept

Your trade's value is applied to your purchase, and the vehicle you are buying carries our posted One Simple Price — a transparent, market-based number that already includes our $788 administrative fee. Because we do not negotiate the vehicle price, your trade value stands on its own rather than being moved around to make a payment work.
